Ebony and ivory

FINALLY! You got it!!

Explanation:

There are two of them

Of different race--Ebony's black, Ivory's white

But of the same land--Both can be found in Africa (Elephant tusks and the Gaboon Ebony species)

Two of ancient times

Hold the keys of old--pianos used to be used of ivory and ebony keys

To the craft of the Muses--piano: music

They are of different flair--ivory's better known for making piano keys, ebony's known for being very dense and tough

Both are from the living--ebony trees are alive, and ivory comes from elephant tusks

but one was animate, the other...not--elephants are animate, trees are simply living
