  2. Charley Smalleash treats his best girl to a trolley ride, but on account of his limited resources they plan to walk back, so, if the car goes at the rate of eight miles an hour and they can walk at the rate of three miles an hour, how far could they ride if they must be back in seven hours?
  3. Here is a puzzle known as the Covent Garden Problem, which appeared in London half a century ago, accompanied by the somewhat surprising assertion that it had mystified the best mathematicians of England: Mrs. Smith and Mrs. Jones had equal number of apples but Mrs. Jones had larger fruits and was selling hers at the rate of two for a penny, while Mrs. Smith sold three of hers for a penny. Mrs. Smith was for some reason called away and asked Mrs. Jones to dispose of her stock. Upon accepting the responsibility of disposing her friend's stock, Mrs. Jones mixed them together and sold them of at the rate of five apples for two pence. When Mrs. Smith returned the next day the apples had all been disposed of, but when they came to divide the proceeds they found that they were just seven pence short, and it is this shortage in the apple or financial market which has disturbed the mathematical equilibrium for such a long period. Supposing that they divided the money equally, each taking one-half, the problem is to tell just how much money Mrs. Jones lost by the unfortunate partnership?
  4. In Hungry Horace's kitchen there were three tins. Each tin contained three delicious cakes: One night Horace crept into the kitchen, opened the three tins, and ate three of the cakes. The surprising thing was, when Horace went back to bed, each tin still contained three cakes. How did he do it? Were they REALLY magic cakes?
  5. While flying over farmland, a pilot notices the rectangular shape of the fields below. She sketches the lines that divide the fields. When she returns to the airport, she wonders how many different rectangles can be formed by the lines drawn?
  6. Micah, Erica, Tomas are standing outside, shoulder to shoulder. Micah has a shadow that is 20ft in length, Tomas has a shadow that is 17ft in length, and Erica has a shadow that is 24ft in length. Assuming that each person's shoulders makes a line segment then the sun is hitting the back of their head 45 degrees off their shoulders. If it is 5pm: how tall is each person? how wide are their shoulders? Who is closest to the sun?

  8. We are taking one statement from each of eight people. The last two are Bill and Susan, or maybe Susan and Bill. Anyway, one of those two is Susan, the other is Bill. See if you can deduce which is Bill and which is Susan: Exactly seven of us are lying. Exactly six of us are lying. Exactly five of us are lying. Yes, exactly five of us are lying. Exactly four of us are lying. Exactly three of us are lying. My name is Susan. My name is Bill.

  10. BMAD, bonanova, and Phase race each other in a 100 meters race. All of them run at a constant speed throughout the race. Bmad beats bonanova by 30 meters. bonanova beats Phase by 20 meters. How many meters does BMAD beat Phase by?
  11. Henry has been caught stealing cattle, and is brought into town for justice. The judge is his ex-wife Gretchen, who wants to show him some sympathy, but the law clearly calls for two shots to be taken at Henry from close range. To make things a little better for Henry, Gretchen tells him she will place two bullets into a six-chambered revolver but not in successive order. She will spin the chamber, close it, and take one shot. If Henry is still alive, she will then either take another shot, or spin the chamber again before shooting. Henry is a bit incredulous that his own ex-wife would carry out the punishment, and a bit sad that she was always such a rule follower. He steels himself as Gretchen loads the chambers, spins the revolver, and pulls the trigger. Whew! It was blank. Then Gretchen asks, 'Do you want me to pull the trigger again, or should I spin the chamber a second time before pulling the trigger?' What should Henry choose?
  12. A farmer challenges an engineer, a physicist, and a mathematician to fence off the largest amount of area using the least amount of fence. The engineer made his fence in a circle and said it was the most efficient. The physicist made a long line and said that the length was infinite. Then he said that fencing half of the Earth was the best. The mathematician laughed at the others and with his design, beat the others. What did he do?
