The definition of ambiguity is when two different people undestand different things. I do admit that my answer is not correct for what the OP *intended* but have you thought what the answer would have been if no symmetry was involved?

Voting for 8.
It can't be one of those with "of" since I've seen enough abbrev. With lowercase o in them eg School of Magic is SoM.
And I'd rather not bandwagon so please don't choose the same as me.

If 2 then --AR- since: --A-- is known, PENCE=0, CHALK=1, CHIRP=1, so only one of R and P is correct, therefore SH are not correct in SHARP=2.
If 1 then --A-P since: --A-- is known, PENCE=0, CHALK=1, CHIRP=1, so only one of R and P is correct and R is not correct because SHARE=1

Mystery Operation V
in New Logic/Math Puzzles
Posted · Edited by araver
Well, this has stayed unanwered for a while (not sure anyone is still trying to solve this) so here are three new cases which should provide a big leap (but not necessarily the whole solution):
12 ||| 4 = 4
7 ||| 3 = 8
8 ||| 11 = 12
5 ||| 6 = 6
2 ||| 3 = 3
18 ||| 19 = 24
7 ||| 11 = 16
11 ||| 31 = 40
7 ||| 28 = 12
9 ||| 30 = 10
15 ||| 16 = 8
2 ||| 5 = 5
2 ||| 11 = 11
13 ||| 11 = 22
