No it's not an animal, but it has something to do with a certain animal!

Just to explain the 'certain animal' hint.

Every line does not give a letter. That's why this is so difficult.

And one line gives 2 letters. That's an anomaly you have to cope with.

And there are totally 5 letters to be found. They are in order, so when you spell out the letters you will immediately see the word.

And you need outside information for the Chessman one.

These are not hints. I am just clearing things up and I didn't mention them at the start, as it would have defeated the purpose of the riddle.
