Question

My first riddle:

My friends all tire, the days grow dark.

So here I'll sit among the bark.

The color the sky will color the ground,

and soon I will hear not a sound.

I turn my back to frozen sky,

It does sting more than even I.

I tarry not far from the den.

The time for retreat will come, but when?

While my life sits upon the brink,

I'll sit and wait for you to think.

What am I?

My first guess

A bear in hibernation? Or some other animal?

IMPORTANT

I forgot to add this to the riddle. Please consider what is italicized.

My first riddle:

My friends all tire, the days grow dark.

So here I'll sit among the bark.

The color the sky will color the ground,

and soon I will hear not a sound.

All my friends do sleep and rest.

But I will not for time is not best.

I turn my back to frozen sky,

It does sting more than even I.

I tarry not far from the den.

The time for retreat will come, but when?

While my life sits upon the brink,

I'll sit and wait for you to think.

What am I?

Thank you for your compliments, but if you will now consider what I added in post#9, that should help you a bit.

With what you added in mind-

Is the bear pregnant? It wants to sleep, but is scared it will go into labor while asleep.

When you said my guess was good, did you mean on the right track or just a good thought?

I meant that your thinking was very near the right track, but sorry to break it to ya;)

it isn't a bear

so...

it is, in fact, an animal that hibernates?

an animal yes, but if I say whether it does or does not hibernate, would make it too simple. the "Hibernation" factor is part of the riddle.

I would also like to say that this riddle is not as simple as it could seem. It actually took research to write this.

Thanks for the help.

I was afraid of that.

how about a raccoon? or a skunk?

you're getting closer,

sting, that's important, and there is more in the riddle that describes the animal, but it is kinda hard to notice.

New world species live in trees,

Armed with many pointy spines

That rival stingers of the bees:

You seem to be a porcupine.

That still doesn't explain weather or not it hibernates.

is it even a mammal? my next guess was rabit, but now I'm not sure.

Plasmid, How did you guess? I am shocked. You are completely correct. Though sad that you figured me out, I am pleased that my puzzle was solvable.

intern121, I will give you credit also for backing Plasmid up.

Many clues were given in my poem

My friends all tire, the days grow dark.

So here I'll sit among the bark.

-The porcupine likes to sit in the trees and eat bark during the darker days of winter.

The color the sky will color the ground,

and soon I will hear not a sound.

-White clouds will make snow fall. Everyone will hibernate and it will be silent.

All my friends do sleep and rest.

But I will not for time is not best.

-The porcupine does not hibernate.

I turn my back to frozen sky,

It does sting more than even I.

-There would be much after sting if you got poked with a porcupine's quill.

I tarry not far from the den.

The time for retreat will come, but when?

-During winter, a porcupine will never travel farther than one mile from its den.

While my life sits upon the brink,

I'll sit and wait for you to think.

-During winter, all animals are in danger of the cold.

Thanks for making my first riddle a sucess! :D :D :D
