Question

I usually come from the south,

A howdy comes from my mouth.

But then I come from the north,

Or skywards from the earth.

I may be a jolly old jerk,

Or even a delay, at work.

Ooooh! Though wrong, your first word is the right idea. Think of another word that means the same thing. For my riddles like these. The third stanza is not part of the word, but describes the word. So, look at the second stanza for the second part of the word, and then the third stanza should confirm it. But, though all words are wrong, you're thinking quite correctly. : )

hillbilly up?

No, you guys are funny. You'll KNOW you have it, when you get it. That last stanza will make you go. "OH! this is it!" Not to mention, it's an actual word.
