Question

Mmkay, so today in class we started Meiosis. We had already learnt what Mitosis was last week, and it made sense, but Meiosis to me just doesn't make sense...It looks exactly like Mitosis, but there's a whole bunch of textbook parts that mention "reproduction", and I'm not seeing how that connects if the cells are multiplying by splitting apart...Help?

Well I know how to explain it in Serbian, but in English...

So I've rummaged through the net and thought of looking it up on YouTube too!

I've searched there for meiosis animation and this is what popped up!

This one lists some of the phases during meiosis!

I don't know how far you go in details in school, but these should be a good place to start in understanding the process.

I hope this helps a bit! :)

Seriously? It was that easy? Then howcome I need to make an entire comparison chart on it? o.O I thought it was way more complex...now how do I expand on that one statement...?

<(^-^)>

Edit: That's a rhetorical question, don't start lecturing me on doing my own work xD

 , I had to do the same thing.

[spoiler=just in case...I'd rather you work on it first ;) ]

In a nutshell:

From what I remember:

Mitosis Meiosis

1. The daughter cells remain the 1. The daughter cells are different,

same as parent cells, the number number of chromosomes is n.

of chromosomes is 2n.

2. Single cycle of mitosis 2. 2 cycles - Meiosis I and Meiosis II

3. Generates 2 daughter cells. 3. Generates 4 daughter cells.

4. Purpose: For cell renewal and 4. To make gametes (sperm/ovum)

regeneration.

5. Occurs in somatic cells 5. Occurs in germ cells.

6. No crossover & synapse. 6. Has crossover & synapse for genetic

information exchange.
