btw, here on BD, we like to use spoilers so you aren't showing the answer to everyone who hasn't guessed yet! :D To insert one, they are to the left, under the smileys. The rest is pretty self explanatory...

Wow, somebody woke up this dead thread!

Unfortunately, it wasn't awoken by the sound of the correct answer.

5 is the key word.

And read the other hints!

Edit: Aaaggh! I'm in the wrong forum! Somebody move me to the New Riddles Forum!

Five legions from another time

Little soldiers 1 inch tall

Although we may seem harmless

By us many will fall.

What are we?

'give him an inch, he'll take a mile' maybe 5 legions worth of inches? or some older unit of measurement the same size as an inch?

Anything to do with the 5 unifying principles that form the foundation of modern biology?

Cell theory

Evolution

Gene theory

Energy

and

Homeostasis

Not sure how it fits the rest, but oh well..

Trees.

Five plant families of trees:

Angiosperms, Conifers, Ginkgos, Cycads and Ferns.

little soldiers could be seedlings.

Many will fall could be leaves in autumn.

Hmmm...

It's not what I'm looking for, but it fits, and quite well. I may just have to add another verse to this old thing.

Nahh... I'll just give another hint.

Hey Norab, Welcome to the den. Just for future reference, when you're answering a riddle, first select "Insert Special Item" then "Insert: Spoiler" so it doesn't spoil the answer for everyone.

Anyway, good guess, but.... No.
