Question

“To the Sea!” the sailors cry,

Professor, Angel, and the Fly.

Three in one on three below,

“To the Sea!” the sailors go.

A sturdy ship to Virgin Isle,

Best in fleet for great the mile.

High on mast where eagle nests

“To the Sea!” these sailors best.

One mast, two mast, three mast down

In ocean’s depth three masts drown.

“What a wondrous desolation!”

This the sailor’s answered question.

I'll stick my neck out

Apollo 11.

“To the Sea!” the sailors cry, -- destination Mare Tranquillitatis

Professor, Angel, and the Fly. -- Neil Armstrong is a former university professor, the fly = Buzz Aldrin, "angel" Michael Collins looked down from above

Three in one -- Apollo crews were three

on three below, -- third planet

“To the Sea!” the sailors go.

A sturdy ship to Virgin Isle, -- Artemis was the virgin huntress of the moon

Best in fleet for great the mile.

High on mast where eagle nests -- landing vehicle was "Eagle"

“To the Sea!” these sailors best.

One mast, two mast, three mast down -- stages jettisoned

In ocean’s depth three masts drown. -- stages hit ocean

“What a wondrous desolation!” -- space?

This the sailor’s answered question.

I'll spoiler it all, sorry.

OK, somebody shoot me down.

You could easily replace "sailor" with "crewmen" and/or "shipmate", I believe. I'm sure Shakee used "sailor" metaphorically, just to try throw us off the trail. Guess we'll see on Monday? B))

Aha. One of them was a sailor.

Neil Armstrong was a Naval aviator. Of course Aldrin was Army and Collins was Air Force, but at least Armstrong was a sailor.

Well done Iconoclast. Correct answer but just a tiny bit off on the analysis.

Yes, Apollo 11 moon mission targeted and landed in the Sea of Tranquility. Armstrong was a University Professor, "Michael" Collins the Angel looking down, and of course "Buzz" Aldrin the Fly.

Three in one is three astronauts in the command module on top of a three stage Saturn rocket below. I referred to the moon as Virgin Isle because basically it was, as no one had ever been there before, but I rather like Icon's Artemis connection. Three masts are the stages dropping into ocean and the eagle's nest is the top where the Eagle Moon Lander was. Buzz Aldrin's actual historic comment about the moon upon walking on it was "What magnificent desolation."

Basically Icon, you nailed it to the wall. Bravo.
