Question

if there is twenty men wearing yellow and blue hats 11 wear yellow and 9 wear blue they are joined by 50 red hatted men 5 yellows go for a drink and 15 reds go to the seaside then they have a battle against an army and the capture 789 soldiers and make them wear yellow hats but 134 wanted to wear red hats so they wore red hats how many of each colour hats are there?

reds:184

yellow:660

blue:9

blue - 9, none added none taken away

red - 50-15=35+134=169

yellow - 11-5=6+789=795-134=661

maybe if you put some grammar in we could understand the puzzle, but when you read it there is no trick.

edit: we had the same answer for the blue - 9. How can I be wrong but you are right???

blue - 9, none added none taken away

red - 50-15=35+134=169

yellow - 11-5=6+789=795-134=661

I used a calculator and asked my maths teacher he says it is right except the yellows are actually 666 because the people who go to the seaside come back and so do the ones who went for a drink!

Assuming hats appear on demand as the story progresses:

Yellow: 11 + 789 = 900

Blue: 9

Red: 50 + 134 = 184

Of the 184 red, 15 go to to the seaside, but they still exist.

Of the 900 yellow, 5 go for a drink and 134 are exchanged for red; but they still exist.

If the OP had asked how many hats of each color are being worn,

then the 134 yellow hats exchanged for red hats would not be counted.

But the OP asks how many of each colour are there.

Yellow = 11 + either 789 - 134 or 0 if by "so they wore red hats" means all 789 captured men wear red instead of yellow

Blue = 9

Red = 50 + either 0 or 134

I am afraid, the riddle, as written, has some vagueness in it.

rereading it I totally agree with Bona now, but I got a PM from explaining that the only reason I was wrong was because the people that left returned, but nowhere in the puzzle does it state that they return, only that they left so...
