Question

I wuld like to suggest a riddle which has no solutiopnj, but which is interesting in theoretical terms. The majority of us, i suppose, are members of sites like hi5, facebook, myspace, or the likes. in some of them, everyone can be informed about how many individuals have visited his profile at a given time.

When do others visit our profiles the more? in the afternoon, when there are more members connected with sites as the above-mentioned, or after midnight, when, as we all know, much less members are connected?

In the first case, there are much more potentialewers of everyone's profile, so in theoretical terms it is more possible that the number of visits in everyone's profile runs than after midnight. on the contrary, everyone who is potential viwer of your profile, at the same time has much more members to see, so it is, in theoretical terms again, less possible to visit YOUR profile.

In the second case, there are much less potential viewers of everyone's profile, so in theoretical terms, it is less possible that the number of visits in everyone's profile runs than in the afternoon. On the contrary, everyone who is a potential viewer of your profile, at the same time has much less other members to see than in the afternoon, so it is, in theoretical terms again, moreossible to visit YOUR profile.

O f course, there are a plethora of factors influencing the quantity of members visiting everyone's profile, which i won't discuss or suggest, at least now, and nobody is, i think, in a position, to solve something which can't be systematized because of these factors. I would like you, though, to tell whatever comes in everyone's mind, about the riddlue at issue.

Well I can tell you that I visit profiles of the people who left interesting posts in threads, regardless whether they only had one post or hundred, whether it's a new or an old topic. I visit sometimes to PM or leave a comment. I also visit people with an interesting signature.

I think the more interesting question is how to make people more interested in visiting your profile, regardless at what time it is!

To avoid misinterpretations of the topic, what matters is only the ''collision'' of hypotheses either when much more members are connected, or when much less members are doing so. In either situation,in theoretical terms it is equally possible that the number of viewers of someone's/everyone's profile runs , as well as that it decreases (though in the reverse direction, and for different reasons)

Jeez... I know what you're saying...

I honestly don't know about the increase and decrease of views of peoples profiles I decided to post something hoping that others will notice your topic and maybe post something significant.

I could only tell you what I know... ;)

once again, what i think is interesting is not what actually happens in our daily experience of viewing profiles or sseing people who have visited our profiles, but the theoretical frame of the topic, namely the paradoxical aspects i mentioned..

tell them if they visit your profile, they get a free candy bar!!!

If nash is trying to say 'At what time' do people visit the profiles the most, then the answer is this: We all live in diffent places and time zones. That truly is a riddle that CANNOT BE ANSWERED!!

Is there something else I'm missing?

Nice observation. but it is not solely the difference in time zones that makes it a riddle. I t is just one of the plethora of factors which compilcate it even more...

An analogy for this could be a raffle for a prize that has 100 tickets. Is the person with a single digit number more or less likely to win than one with a double digit number. It is much more likely that a double digit number be drawn than a single digit however, if a single digit number is drawn it is more likely to be yours.

Have I understood this correctly?

I just thought of something else!

When there are more members, there are more posts. If there are more posts the members are more likely to read posts than other people's profiles. And regulars are more likely to visit newbies profile than a regular's profile.

And you have to count in the guests too because their visit counts as well :)

Guests are more likely to read some other forum first other than New Puzzles or the Others so regulars have less chance to get a visit. Newbies tend to check a lot of profiles when they join. (Rookies info - from 20 to 50 people join every day) Over 60 % of members and it probably reflects on guests as well, are Americans.

Again these are the things that I've noticed and they might tribute to the overall non-solution! :D

And yes I know that this is not what you are talking about! You said it yourself though that it's unsolvable ;)

both the analogy you mentioned, as well as the comment of Andromeda are plain

Andromeda...................The riddle could refer not only to the visits of profiles , but also to the number of messages send and received, as well (after all, as it is logical, the vast majority of messgages we sent or receive, come as a cosequence of a profile's visit). So, in the same light, it is also arguable (at least theoretically) that someone/everyone receives more messages, when there are more members connected, despite the fact that it is higly possible on the whole that the total number of messages sebnt or received within one site is greater in such a case, than, say, after midnight

Andromeda...................The riddle could refer not only to the visits of profiles , but also to the number of messages send and received you never mentioned that before , as well (after all, as it is logical, the vast majority of messgages we sent or receive, come as a cosequence of a profile's visit I think posts really and in that case you don't need to visit the profile to PM, just click on SEND MESSAGE it's above the avatar, or I go to Board Index there's a PM button, but I'll most likely do a Members search and again click on send message without visiting the profile, I rarely visit profile to PM, or I'll find the member through my messenger, the carbon copy search, I tend to do that lately). So, in the same light, it is also arguable (at least theoretically) that someone/everyone receives more messages, when there are more members connected not necessarily, despite the fact that it is higly possible on the whole that the total number of messages sebnt or received within one site is greater in such a case, than, say, after midnight

I tempered with the quote tags so you could answer on my post if you want to. I didn't visit your profile just yet ;) not even as a guest...

I'll check you now! :)
