Are the dollar amounts relevant to the solution (could it have been 2 dollars and $2mil)? Is the man an officer of the law? There are many possible solutions, so we need to narrow down the one wanted. Could it be that she bought an item in one country (Mexico, Russia) for a low price, and had to pay an import fee? (this happened to someone I know, they tried importing some Vodka from Russia into Finland, and get a heavy fine) Is the "very common item" important? I am thinking that it could also be along the lottery line that someone mentioned.. her and her husband were divorcing, and she bought a ticket and won $40,000 +, but he found out so he still go half so essentially she lost that $20,000, even though she still did infact gain $20,000 at the same time???
