There is a two digit number...

When you square it , half it, add 36 to the quotient and then divide it by 2 ..... The digits gets reversed ... What is the number ???

Means ....

1) Square the number i.e. x²

2) Half the product you got from step 1 .... and so on

Means ....

1) Square the number i.e. x²

2) Half the product you got from step 1 .... and so on

You need to numbers to obtain a quotient. For example, the quotient of 6 over 3 is 2. Which two numbers here do you use? The squared number from step 1 and half of that number from step 2? Using this results in the following:

( x^2 / ( x^2 / 2) + 36 ) / 2 = y

therefore y = 19 and although all the x's drop out of the equation, the reverse must be 91.

"half it" means divide by 2, the result of halfing would be the quotient

OHHHHHH! :) Makes all the sense in the world now! Apologies for the confusing mumbo-jumbo earlier.

( x^2 / 2 + 36 ) / 2 = y

x^2 / 4 + 18 = y

Clearly, for this to work, x^2 / 4 + 18 must be less than 100. This means that x is less than 19. x must also be greater than 9. 10,11,12,13,14,15,16,17,18 all don't work, so it is unsolvable this way, unless I made a mistake.

Quotient is the answer you get when you divide .... when you halve a number, you are dividing it by 2 ;)
