Yesterday upon the stair

I met a man that wasn't there

He wasn't there again today

I wish he would go away

and then when I came home at three

the little man was waiting there for me

but when I looked around the hall

I couldn't see him there at all

go away, go away, and don't come back any more

go away, go away, and hey, don't slam the door

your inner child...

...you should let him out to play!

It's a statue.

Like at the Lincoln Memorial: You meet statue at the top of the stairs, but Mr. Lincoln isn't actually there.

I can't imagine why you would want him to go away though. Maybe you are trying to build a huge mall over him.

This riddle is hard... if my guess is wrong then I agree with jsahni's answer.

Can we get a hint?

I would say that it is a cuckoo clock. At three, the clock would ring three times and the little bird/man would pop out. Then he would disappear. As for slamming the door, it might refer to the cuckoo clock's door or the chiming. Perhaps, the narrator is afraid of cuckoo clocks.
