Tougher than nails, the pride of the South*

An alloy as my host

Red and white and dark as night

You'll smile if I'm too close

What am I?

Is "tougher than nails" literal or figurative? If its figurative then my answer would be

The confederate flag?

Was the pride of the south during the civil war.

Doesn't seem to work with the last line though.

If it's literal then

The south's railroad system/a rail road car?

no one has it so far...but you're onthe right track with a classic piece of Americana (although it's a world-wide thing)

Is it Coca Cola?

Welcome to the Den, Dawn615! You are correct!!! However, please try to use a spoiler to insert your answer in the future...you don't want to spoil the fun for others! :)
