It is the blue (shorter wavelength) that is reflected off of the gas molecules in the atmosphere causing the sky to be blue. A time when the sky appears a different color would be in the evening when the light must travel through much more atmosphere to reach your eyes, thus giving it more oportunity to reflect the higher wavelength colors.
