Question

The jailer calls an inmate on the 10th of May 2011, and tells him, the court has ordered to hang you in the month of June 2011, but the date is to be decided by me. I can assure you that the date of your hanging will be a complete surprise for you. The inmate thought for a while and then declared - in that case Sir, you can not hang me. The inmate was right. How?

June 31, 2011

LOL

Here's what the inmate is thinking...

"I cannot be hanged on the June 30th as this would not be a surprise. If I'm still alive on June 29th then I know tomorrow is the day. So, I cannot be hanged on the June 29th as well, because if I'm still alive on June 28th and I know that it cannot be June 30th, then I will know that tomorrow is the day." He then continues this logic all the way to the June 1st coming to the conclusion that no particular day in June can be a total surprise.

Except, of course, June 31st. :)
