This is a sentence with 4 THATs

Figure out how to properly punctuate this sentence and explain its meaning:

That that that that man wrote should be deleted.

^_^

That what, that man wrote should be deleted. I've punctuated it.

one of the "that" should be deleted for the sentence to make sense usually "that, that that man wrote should be deleted" with only 3 "that". so i guess, pointing at one of ur "that"s : that "that", that that man wrote should be deleted.

:) so?

That "that", that that man wrote, should be deleted.

Think bettyb beat me to it

All 4 thats should stay, as per fabby, though the quotes are not actually necessary.

That that, that that man wrote, should be deleted.

I'm numbering them 1,2,3,4 in order -

1 refers to that #2 - specifically, it refers to which that should be deleted

2 is the that being referred to by 1 - it is the subject of the clause

3 is the clause connecting word - it could also be replaced with "which"

4 refers to which man

The commas separate 2 clauses, as one clause is inserted into the other. Each clause has its subject ("That that" for the 1st clause, & "that man" for the 2nd) and verb/clause ending ("should be deleted" for the end of the clause which begins first, & "wrote" for the clause that begins last).

No punctuation is actually needed here, although this sentence would probably earn you a very bad grade from your English teacher! I'll substitute with quotes to illustrate: That "post" that "Dave" wrote should be deleted. You might be able to include some commas like tiger_lilly did, but I don't think it's needed, and I think most English teachers prefer the fewest number of commas possible.
