Question

A man weighs 296 pounds and has 3 2 pound mellons to take home

to get home, he has to cross a bridge with a strict weight limit of 300 pounds

how does he make it across, in one trip, without leaving or throwing a mellon???

he can eat one mellon.

at which point he weighs 298 pounds... how does this help?

I'm reasonably sure the accepted answer for this is juggling... but I would claim this wouldn't work since in order to throw or catch a 2 pound melon up one needs to exert more than 2 lbs of force (which would then be transmitted through the man onto the bridge breaking it). I would recommend tieing (sp?) the melons to a string and float them over as you walk across the bridge... (requires string but less skill...) Of course if he had enough string he could just tie the melons to the string and drag them over once he crossed. Aircraft would work as well... remote controlled vehicles...

I would carry both mellons and just pay the fine for overloading the bridge :)

Or assuming I don't have anything else at my hands beside the two mellons I would wait one day. Nature calls will reduce my weight enough to pass the bridge.
