Question

I just had an awesome Monday after which I sat down to figure out this one.

Our origins are something of mystery and debates.

Accepting only those with certain traits.

Your beliefs may help guide you in your task.

How we do not care but are obligated to ask.

Some view us with suspicion and disdain.

Though with our help even fewer will complain.

Our symbol is known both far and wide.

Even though some may think somethings we hide.

You can grace our house if you wish to see.

But remember to our rules you must agree.

If you accept, count the steps, three.

And when you are completed, then you can see.

Ok I hope I did this riddle some justice and not confused anyone :)

TrickyThief you are 100% correct :)

I had just gotten back from one of our Raisings and well I was definately in the mood to create a riddle.

I am a Master Mason and treasurer for Teikoku Lodge #19, Okinawa Japan :)

Our origins are something of mystery and debates. -- The exact date of when FreeMasonry was created is debated by many

Accepting only those with certain traits. -- You must be a male, free born, over 21, good character, and believe in somekind of higher power (ie: cannot be an atheist)

Your beliefs may help guide you in your task. -- Must believe in some kind of higher power for the teachings to truly mean something

How we do not care but are obligated to ask. -- Your actual beliefs do not matter (I am Wiccan and a FreeMason)

Some view us with suspicion and disdain. -- Some people view Masonry as a secret society or something to fear

Though with our help even fewer will complain. -- Though you will never hear anybody bad mouth the charities or the Shriner Hospitals

Our symbol is known both far and wide. -- The Square and Compass is everywhere in almost every country

Even though some may think somethings we hide. -- FreeMasonry is a believed to be a Secret Society, if you search the web you can find out a lot though :)

You can grace our house if you wish to see. -- For most lodges there are open houses and to join a lodge all you have to do is ask

But remember to our rules you must agree. -- Obviously to join you must meet the above rules and follow the rules of the lodge

If you accept, count the steps, three. -- In the Blue house of a lodge there are 3 steps or degrees. Even Shriners, Scottish Rite or York Rite have made through these first three steps.

And when you are completed, then you can see. -- Once you have reached Master Mason you are able to see much more.

Thanks everyone for guessing :)

YOU SEE... i had never heard of the free masons, but only of the three masons.... you should google three masons, and that might explain it better than i can.

EDIT: it seems that i knew who the free masons were without even knowing it... i guess i might have just tweaked the name a little, and made it my own..... i don't know... and good riddle by the way halo!!!

Thanks Chrispen, I don't know much about the Three Masons but I have done as you suggested and looked a bit up. Very interesting.

@ Halo: To add the 'Solved' feature, click on "Add Reply" from the topic page, then click the "Manage Topic Poll" button at the top, above the message body area. In the 2nd edit text line, type "Solved" (under the 'optional' line). In the 3rd edit text line, provide whatever information you want - who solved it, post #, URL for the post.

The full directions are available in the "Important: Read Before Posting" information, including the directions for linking to a specific post. (This usually takes a couple of tries for most people.) :)
