Hi Math Student, and welcome to the Den http://brainden.com/forum/uploads/emoticons/default_cool.png' alt='B))'>

Fair enough. I'll list a hard case for each known weight. If you can solve one of them, just reply OK. If I see an OK I'll revisit my analysis.

A run can be any length, including 0. Since the run is odd, it's 1, 3, 5, etc.

Well it was a fun exercise, but ...

Does "weigh" refer to use of the scales? or does it mean "weight"? If the latter, how many times may the scales be used?

    6128 + 9091 = 9825 8159 + 1912 = ?

This is a fairly good reference.

That's it. Here I am wondering why this was never found. Nice going.

So, now let the OP say ... The bag contains John's marble collection. Some of his marbles are red. It's an even bet that if his sisters each draw one marble, they will both be red. How many red marbles might there have been in the bag before the sisters chose theirs?

    Nah, you got it ... I meant a.m. or p.m. that's all.

Hi Ian, and welcome to the Den. The puzzle states that the answer isn't a whole number, so that isn't it, sorry. Hint: putting answers into spoilers hides them for others who want to solve on their own.

That's a fair question. What I'll say is that I asked for something more exact than anything you could get from curve fitting so you wouldn't try that way to solve it Next I'll say there is an expression, not an overly difficult one, that generates all the numbers in the OP, including the unknown one. The expression is interesting because it generates this string of integer values with an irrational number right in the middle. If you're wondering, even knowing the missing number - and you're in the ball park - may not help you find the expression. That's general information. Now here are two clues:

Not exactly elegant, but I don't think there are any smaller solutions. Can anyone find a non-brute force way to find that solution? John can certainly pass that bag. Nice. Can anyone find an even smaller solution?

    Bingo. Honorable Mention to Imran.

Your accurate clock has hands that mark hours, minutes and seconds. The seconds hand points to a minute mark, 13 minute marks behind the hours hand. What time could it be?
  16. bonanova

That's a correct answer, and you are the first solver. Now let's introduce a sanity check by stipulating normal sized marbles and the ability for John to hand the bag to his sisters. Are there other solutions?

You learn of a weighing job that's up for bids. You're out to make some money, so you look into it. Some guy has 26 rocks, weighing from 1 to 26 pounds, inclusive, not necessarily distinct. The stones each weigh a whole number of pounds, and the job is to label all the stones with their correct weight. You have a balance - you know the kind - that gives one of three outcomes for the Left and Right pans: L<R L=R L>R Luckily, you have an infinite supply of labels marked 1 to 26; what you don't have is any known weights. You call the warehouse and find that whole-numbered weights cost $10 apiece and arbitrary-numbered weights cost $12 each. Given that you want the job if you can clear $20 profit, what should you bid?
