when you use digit sums

True, but we can add some more contraints to clear that out,

What we started with

99>100

99>101

101> 100

and the new ones.

99 > 121

99 > 119

121 > 119

Continuous sum of digits (ends with a digit 1-9)

99 -> 9+9=18 -> 1+8=9

100 -> 1+0+0 -> 1

101 -> 1+0+1 -> 2

119 -> 1+1+9=11 -> 1+1=2

121 -> 1+2+1 -> 4

OK so this probably wont work because it modifies the original question but simply put the only way

99>100 and 99>101 is if 100 and 101 were negative numbers.

i.e. 99>-100 and 99>-101

granted that still doesn't solve the whole 100<101 thing. but it's a viable thought in the beginning.

I thought it was obvious from the microwave hint, but since no one has answered,here goes:

1:00 and 1:01 are less than 99 minutes, etc.

You are mostly getting it.

On a microwave, if you type in 99, it equals 1 minute and 39 seconds. If you type in 100, it registers as 1 minute, and if you type in 101, it registers as 1 minute and one second.
