Guest
There are 20 people at this birthday party, where 10 are men, 5 kids and rest women. So, the etiquette here is like follows: a. when men meet men for the first time, they greet by shaking hands b. when men meet women for the first time, they greet with a hug. c. when women meet women for the first time, they too shake hands with each other. d. EVERY ADULT greet the birthday boy (man) with both shake hands and hugs. d. kids just say "hi". No shake hands, no hugs! And, the question here is -- How many shake hands and hugs were exchanged at that party (given that every one met each other)?

0 dyalDragon
Hi dyalDragon, The birthday boy is is mentioned specifically as a man in the question. noticed that right after i posted, need to learn to read more carefully k if the birthday boy is a man, then that leaves 9 men after him and the totals should be 60 hugs, 61 handshakes, and 5 neglected kids however if the birthday boy is a man, and is also not counted as one of the ten men, then there is the birthday man, 10 men, 5 kids and 4 women then we have 55 hugs, 66 handshakes and i still don't know if there is cake or not

0 Guest
There is a formula using permutation & combination that will make this problem so easy!
0 dyalDragon
the birthday boy gets 9 shakes and hugs from the men and 5 from the women the men shake 9c2 hands, the women shake 5c2 hands, and the 9 men each hug the 5 women so thats 14 + 45 hugs = 59 and 14 + 36 + 10 shakes =
