hugemonkey
The smartest thing I’ll ever do, Is make harmonic rhymes for you. You never eat, at least I’m told. You never ask about my gold. The slightest, nuanced turn of phrase, Should not suffice to shift your gaze. I always wondered what it’s for, As glowing embers burnt the floor. The last republic which it stands, Was often in divided lands. Birds will sing in mocking tones, And fish swim over sailor’s bones. When lies eliminates the true, Then some violence is due. Good guess but not correct. As a welcome gift, I will sum up my two hints so far: Glycereine had the answer (coincidentally) in his first post on this topic but it was not anywhere his answer. This puzzle contains a cipher, an anagram and an acronym but no metaphors.

0 hugemonkey
Apply this key to every line, And then your answer will be mine Gee, is this when you say glove? And this is it in the line above. The answer will be clear, you’ll see, When you begin to use the key.

0 Guest
"Gee, is this when you say glove? And this is it in the line above." "It" refers to the key. What is the key? Yeah, that didn't really explain anything. How did you arrive at your answer?
0 hugemonkey
Spoiler for The entire riddle explained: First is the key: Apply this key to every line, And then your answer will be mine The previous two lines are simply explaining what to do with the key once you discover it. These next two lines are the key. Gee, is this when you say glove? The letter "G" is the first letter of the word GLOVE And this is it in the line above. the word THIS is the third word of the line above it. The answer will be clear, you’ll see, When you begin to use the key. So the key to the cipher is: THE FIRST LETTER OF THE THIRD WORD and this is applied to each line of the "poem". When lies eliminate the true, Then some violence is due. None will ever “guess” this riddle You may need someone’s help, a little. or THE ANSWER IS SEVEN Also said that the riddle had an acronym and an anagram (as well as a cipher). The anagram is SPITEFUL VOW or FIVE PLUS TWO which is of course 7. The acronym is the parenthetical title Violence is inevitable, VII or roman numeral for seven. The other clue that i gave was that Glycereine had it (coincidentally) in his post but not his answer. I was planning on say this about whoever made post number 7 I also said that is was an adjective, which it is, but that bit of information is not exactly helpful in solving the riddle. Most of the individual lines were pulled from various riddles that I have seen on the den (with some modification) and was a deliberate attempt to make people think that it may be a "metaphor" type riddle (like lotuses) but taken to the point of ridiculousness to make you think that there must be something else going on. Thanks every one for playing along! *EDITED DUE TO GLITCHY SPOILER BOX* Edited June 10, 2009 by hugemonkey

Maybe]They're automatically italicized, so you probably double italicized it and that's why it did that.
