0 Guest
I'm thinking it might be... ...the color red? Two siblings I have and not one more Blue and yellow, the other primary colors in pigmentation. But cousins I number a million score Lots of colors. Of all I’m the tallest by just a bit Longest wavelength. But our ages don’t differ, no not a nit Self-explanatory. If someone is drowning I’d be first to leave Pale, clammy skin. But I’m first to come running if flesh is cleaved Red blood flowing. A lovers’ blush, Hot anger’s rush All one in the same to my formless touch Red faces. You never will see me in night’s late dark Unless you illume Nat Hawthorne’s mark The scarlet 'A'. If you see me, be warned if I show of a sign Red in anger. But merriment make when I show of the vine Drunken blush. I’m sure to appear when coals fan to flame Red coals and fire. So don’t keep me waiting, what is my name? Do I win? Do I win? Red [scarlet Letter, warning sign, red wine, coals] and blood [running from cleaved flesh, blush, anger's rush] come to mind. The siblings and cousins things are puzzling. Tallest by just a bit could refer to red light having the longest wavelength of visible light. Except the "by just a bit" couldn't mean percentage - red/blue =~ 1.75 wavelength ratio - almost double. Perhaps erythrocytes [red blood cells] with and without oxygen - two siblings. Or the siblings could be the other two types of blood cells -- thrombocytes [platelets] and leukocytes [white blood cells]. Cousins could be other red cells. But that's more poetic than factual. Sibblings: green and blue; Cousins: red mixed with green and/or blue which means millions of sibblings Off by a bit, might refer to the binary system. Though that is incorrect too because most probably a lot more bits don't match (there's just combination that's one bit off from full red: 255,0,0 vs 254,0,

Question
Guest
Two siblings I have and not one more
But cousins I number a million score
Of all I’m the tallest by just a bit
But our ages don’t differ, no not a nit
If someone is drowning I’d be first to leave
But I’m first to come running if flesh is cleaved
A lovers’ blush, Hot anger’s rush
All one in the same to my formless touch
You never will see me in night’s late dark
Unless you illume Nat Hawthorne’s mark
If you see me, be warned if I show of a sign
But merriment make when I show of the vine
I’m sure to appear when coals fan to flame
So don’t keep me waiting, what is my name?
