That is correct. If you look the cardinal directions up and look at the etymology, you will find roughly the following: North=Left (from west), West=Evening, East=Dawn, and South=Sun. The compass rose is usually shown over large bodies of water, where there's not a whole lot happening on maps and globes. Nice job you guys. North pole was close, but it's an entirely different entity.
