About 27 years ago, 1982 I believe it was, a few of my environmentalist friends and I heard tell that a pack of red wolves had been spotted migrating near the Southern Appalachians. So being near enough in Tuscaloosa to make the journey, and feeling in a right-sporting mood, we ventured forth to observe these magnificent creatures first hand. We were lucky to find a good, high spot and climbed to an excellent perch that commanded a clear view of the flat, green plain below. It seemed the perfect place to spot them. Sure enough, it wasn’t long before we noticed a dozen or so of these proud beasts mingling near the edge of the valley. We watched in awe. Then suddenly, one of my companions gasped. “Look!” he cried, pointing to one end of the valley. We trained our binoculars in that direction and noticed the mouth of a large cave from which emerged a great and fearsome bear, loping out across the grassy plain toward the astounded wolves. But even more to their fear (and our visceral delight), close behind this magnificent creature came a large number of his brood following in close pursuit, undoubtedly fired with the scent of wolf-blood in their nostrils. Sadly for the wolves, they had no way to escape and the slaughter was horrific. The magnificent bear and his hungry family were merciless.
