Question

Four mathematician friends were hanging out at a diner one night. After several hours, the waitress dropped off the check. The four friends spent a few seconds figuring out who owed what and how to divide up the total, and handed credit cards to the waitress when she came by, along with notes instructing her how much to put on each card.

At the register, the first card she came to included this note: 100204180.

Smiling, she simply placed that card on the counter and charged the entire bill to the other three cards.

What did the waitress figure out from the note?

If she was their waitress, wouldn't she know that the first mathematician ate nothing, and therefore charged him nothing?

It's more of a logical approach, but it seems accurate.

She would know that he *ordered* nothing, but not necessarily that he *ate* nothing. Split a sandwich with another guy, ate all his friend's fries, etc.

1 I

0 owe

0 nothing

2 to

0 no-one

4 for

1 I

8 ate

0 nothing

It's the 'no-one' that's messing you up. That would require a '1', from my pov.

1= i

0= owe

0= nothing

2- to

0- any one

4- for

1= i

8- ate

0- nothing

then mr captin peg leg paid the bill for everyone.

I ought naught to owe, for I ate nothing.

Good job people :)

This is the version that I was thinking of.

Although, Hippiechick's version with 'none' also works. 'No one' needs another digit (1), but 'none' works fine too.
