This is an easy one.

it is 12. if we consider 5=x then 5*5=36 can be written as x^2=36. and 5+5 as 2x. therefore 2x=12

I thought 12 at first, but the more i thought of it...

if 36 is five fives, then than one 5 is 1/5 of 36, so 5 + 5 would be 2/5 of 36 = about 14.4

In other words if five groups of five is 36, then two groups of five (5 + 5) should be 2/5 of 36

think about this.

x=5

y=6

x=y (which is untrue, hence the ...ish)

x^2=y^2 (which is actually the part of the first question)

Then 2x=2y, right?

There's your 12

but because x also equals x, you could also think of 5+5 (x+x) which is 10.

Then also x+y, which is 11

So you get three answers, 12, 11, and 10.

Your idea works also, i guess.
