Question

Imagine there are two places, point a and point b, which are 6000 meters apart from each other. There are two different kinds of birds on each point. Assume that one bird flies 500 meters per minute and the other bird flies 300 meters. If the birds start out at the the same time, in how long will they meet each other?

I imagine they would meet at their own speed/(Aspeed+Bspeed)... so...5/8 for A or 3/8 for B

6000/8 = 750

750/500 = 1.5

1.5*5 = 7.5

therefore they will meet after 7.5 minutes of flight (assuming they are in fact flying towards each other)

6 min 15 seconds. i don't have a method other than to draw a line and tick off the incriments of 500 on one end and 300 on the other end and count the # of times i did this.

scratch that... my original line was wrong. but fyi it would take 6 min 15 sec to meet at 5000 meters apart!

you know, i learned how to do this in algebra 2, but i suffer from extream lazyness desise, so here is the formula... i think...

Speed*distance+Speed*distance=Total distance

so simplified it would be

800x=6000

so scince i have it down to a division problem... the awnser is...

Spoiler for :

x=7.5, or 7 min, 30 sec

Well it seems to me, that the puzzle says "There are two different kinds of birds on each point". This must mean, that there fast birds at either end, (500+500)X=6000. X=6.

That could be true, but I just don't think that's what the OP meant. But yeah, with your wording, you're correct, with mine, everyone else is.

Or at least we think we are, as there's been no response from the author.

I like physics

I converted speeds to m/s

V1=speed of bird a

V2=speed of bird b

S=VT+.5AT^2

A=0

S=(V1+V2)T

S/(V1+V2)=T

6000/(13.333333333333)=T

(450)/(60)=T (for minutes)

7.5=T

About 7.5 min until contact, not really brain teaser, just physics problem
