Question

Ok, so basically, there was a father and son (the mother had died giving birth to the son), and the father was very proud of his son. One thing the father could not understand was his son's taste in birthday presents. As soon as the son was old enough to speak, on his next birthday he specifically asked his father to buy him a pink golf ball, the father-whilst slightly taken aback-decided to buy his son what he wanted. Next year the same happened: the father asked his son what he wanted for his birthday and the son asked for some pink golf balls. This went on for some years, the son only ever asked for pink golf balls, nothing else would tempt him. His father was rather confused but always gave his son what he asked for. Eventually the son reached his 17th birthday, and when his father asked him what he wanted it was no surprise that he asked for pink golf balls. The father decided to buy him some pink golf balls, but he also bought his son a car. On the day of the son's birthday, when he saw he had been bought a car he was really happy and decided to take it out for a spin. He drove into town and while he was driving he saw a sports shop selling pink golf balls. Naturally he wanted to go and have a look. He parked opposite the sports shop, got out and was crossing the road when he was his by a fast moving van.

The son was rushed to hospital, badly injured and with every breath he was growing weaker. As soon as his father heard the news he got to the hospital as fast as he could. The father saw his son looked as if he hadn't long to live. He had to ask his son one question.

"Son, all these years you have only asked for pink golf balls for your birthday, please tell me why"

The son opened his mouth to speak, and died.

What is the moral of this story?
