Mind Trap #125 - Death in a Tent

Question:

Shadow flipped the tent flap open and surveyed the scene. On the floor, in the centre of the tent, a man lay dead from self inflected gunshot wounds. In the corner of the tent was a small cot. A package of cigarettes and an empty whiskey bottle lay on the bedside table next to a kerosene lamp. Shadow combed the tent for additional clues to the possible motive. Other then the articles mentioned, the only things Shadow found were a half dozen small circular wooden disks under the cot, the mans personal effects, and a variety of scrapbooks and news clippings. Shadow found the last articles particulary strange since it was learned the suicide victim was completely illiterate. What was the reason for the apparent suicide?

what if the deceased was depressed from thinking he was growing (thus putting his career as a professional midget in jeopardy) so he took up drinking and smoking. A friend (who I assume wanted him to 'off' himself) bought him a dog to cheer him up (the reason for the papers), only to take him away (on purpose to mess with the guys head (remember he wants the guy to kill himself)) and drive the midget to commit sucide.

The man was a partial cripple who worked for a circus. He was known as the world's shortest living adult. Someone was cutting short pieces from the end of his walking cane. Consequently, he thought he was starting to grow and would eventually lose not only his notoriety but also his job

Sorry for the typo's, I was a little tired when writing the riddle, and missed it in my reading over. Ill try hareder to clean my posts from errors before hitting the big post button.
