Question

Draw this figure with out:

Drawing over lines

lifting up your writing instrument

erasing/altering lines that you have drawn

folding/manipulating the writing surface

Here is a pic i put on image shack, paint is not that great of a program, i will try to get a better one up later

Also the writing instrument is a standard pen, just to clarify

Also it is 100% possible

Edit: it is a 2D image, and the jagged edges in the pictures are suppose to be smooth,

...there would have to be some trick involved. Drawing a continuous line, you can only have an odd-node at the start and end points of the line, and this figure has four 5-nodes.

However, there are certain tricks you could employ such as clicking the pen to retract the nib (without lifting up the pen), or moving from one part of the figure to another by drawing over a second strip of paper that you lay over the top, etc.

I'd like to know if you had something else in mind...

octopuppy, it wouldn't be as complex as all those tricks

he said you had to draw the figure, but he never said it was all you could draw. you just have to draw outside of the figure to, in the process, create it. that way, each node does have a sixth line connected to it, it's just not shown in the diagram he drew.

i'm not really sure how to prove that it works without a picture, and i dont feel like making one right now, but hopefully that's clear enough

Just an after thought, if you folded the paper (asuming you are drawing it on paper) in half it become a piece of cake.

all you have to do is not cross the line and follow the other line.

so er...

good job.

um. how do u attach images?

what about that big black line that hasn't been drawn?

also, i thought you are allowed to cross lines, but just not draw completely over them

Ok here is a hint

The figure DOES NOT have 14 lines or 16 lines, it has more

Also you cant click a pen, or use multiple pieces of paper,

Also here is a hint for the middle

the middle section has four lines

octopuppy and esjohnson are correct in their comments about too many odd parity nodes.

jimmyt's suggestion of adding a line can reduce their number to two.

The spoiler contains one way to do this.

Still, that's not what the OP asks us to do, so this doesn't seem to be a solution.

  1. Start at any of the 5th order nodes and draw diagonally to another 5th order node.
  2. Draw the inside square.
  3. Draw the outside square. This leaves you with the other diagonal.
  4. To draw it, make an extra line outside the figure to an adjacent 5th order node.
  5. Draw the final diagonal.
Steps 4 and 5 change two of the 5th order nodes into 6th order nodes.

Again, this doesn't seem to answer the OP

Ok I have made the solution and it took me an hour to do it, it is a very clear and precise solution, with only one trick...

I will post it when someone tells me how many lines there are in the figure (that is the trick)

oh... i wouldn't have thought of that. when you drew the original diagram did u actually make two parrallel lines for all of them?

although, following your instructions to the letter i believe my solution would still work
