Question

Got sent this but can't seem to find the solution

Imagine a room with the dimensions of 6.9m by 14.2m. The ceiling is 6m high. There are two windows with dimensions of 2m by 2.2m.

Imagine you are in the exact centre of the room and then imagine that there are eight men all with guns pointing at you.

Imagine you go on and play a game of Russian Roullete. Imagine you are told that one of the eight guns has a bullet, whilst the other seven have blanks. Imagine a second person comes and joins you in the middle. You have to now pick which gun shoots at you and then the second person does the same thing. Whoever gets shot with the live bullet dies, as you would expect.

But there is a TWIST. IF the person to be shot at believes the gun has a live bullet he can forfeit. In forfeiting the game the person has to give all their possesions (family, house, job etc) to the other person.

You have to decide who goes first.

a) Should you go first or second.

b) Is there a logical method of working out which one has the bullet

c) How can you GUARANTEE that you walk away with everything.

Clue: The answer is obvious when you think about the setup clearly.

Just choose to go first, and then forfeit. The second person gets all your possessions, but then they will probably forfeit too, giving their possessions and your old ones back to you.

Although I'm not sure that constitutes a "guarantee."

Basically the 8 must be equally spaced around the room. i.e. one in each corner and one between each of those. All are pointing their guns towards the middle, If another person joins then you move out of the line of 6 of the guns. Of the other two that are pointing at you and the other person let the other person choose first. Either they get shot or you know the bullit is in the gun pointing at you.

Why do they have to be equally spaced around the room? I didn't read that in the puzzle?

The room isn't square, and both of us cannot stand in the exact middle. One weapon will have my opponent in the path pointing to me, so I know I have one safe choice. I would have my opponent go first, hoping that he would not risk his life for everything, and then I would choose as my second choice the weapon pointed at my opponent (as an obstacle). For his choice for the third weapon, very few would take a 16.7% risk of death for great wealth.

The problem for my logic comes when I have to choose 4th...

Oh, and I can't figure out why the windows matter...

All of the shooters dont have to be around you. They could all be in a line right in front of you. There wouldnt have to be a weapon whos path had to go through your opponent.

If you get to arrange everyone's positions, then put the 8 guys with guns in a line (like you're lining up to buy tickets at the movies). You pick first. When someone fires the live bullet, it will hit the gunman in front of him. Since you picked first, the unlucky guy that joined you in the middle will pick last. If by some chance none of the first 7 gunmen had the real bullet, the guy next to you will forfeit.

Maybe this isn't the best answer, but I like it anyways!

I think the answer actually is obvious. Does this work?

I would choose to go second. The first person would choose someone to shoot and if he gets shot with the live bullet, he dies and I live. If he gets shot with a blank then I would chose the same person to shoot at me. Sounds legal all it states is;

"You have to now pick which gun shoots at you and then the second person does the same thing." so doing the same thing mean picking the same person, who either is empty or has blanks...

This riddle was posted earlier today, and the answer given was something along the lines of: "You're TOLD that there is one real bullet and seven blanks, but you KNOW that all the guns actually have blanks in them. So you just keep picking guns until the other person has to forfeit because they think they're about to be shot."

This must have been a "riddle" the original poster's 1st grader made up during "brainstorming time" at school. And I, for one fell for it. Grrr. Not a riddle at all.
