Question

The five pirates mentioned previously are joined by a sixth, then plunder a ship with only one gold coin.

After venting some of their frustration by killing all on board the ship, they now need to divvy up the one coin. They are so angry, they now value in priority order:

1. Their lives

2. Getting money

3. Seeing other pirates die.

So if given the choice between two outcomes, in which they get the same amount of money, they'd choose the outcome where they get to see more of the other pirates die.

How can the captain save his skin?

take the coin, tell all the pirates that if they argue about it they will be killed... they value their lives more than anything right...? (they are all equal in that respect) So next up their priority is getting money, but if they get money, they die, so the seccond priority would conflict the resolution of the first priority, and they'd be stuck in a paradox type of situation where if they try to take the money, they are in conflict with their first priority, which is their lives.

since I previously said that the original capt is dead, the new capt (this makes 5 total pirates) could tell the remaining four to fight for the coin and throw it up in the air for them to catch. They all kill each other.

Wondering what's the new pirate rank..???

Wondering if the coint count on board is the same and if these priorities are the same cos point three is not intelligent anymore

If the one and only coin is given to the lowest rank the others may want to kill that pirate, but he does not want to die so gives it away, but does this become the unwanted coin!

Twas an ancient mariner and he stopeth one of three - They killed an albertross me thinks - For all averred I had killed the bird that made the breeze to blow - Coleridge

Top ranked poem me thinks

If the pirates are now numbered 1 to 6, with 1 being most senior (the captain) then he gives the coin to pirate 5.

Reason:

If only pirates 5 & 6 were left, then pirate 5 would keep the coin.

If pirates 4, 5 & 6 were left then pirate 6 would be given the coin (pirate 4 votes aye for his life and pirate 6 votes aye for the money)

If pirates 3, 4, 5 & 6 were left then pirate 4 would get the money (pirate 3 votes aye for his life, pirate 4 votes aye for the money)

If pirates 2, 3, 4, 5 & 6 were left then there's nothing pirate 2 could do to save his life, so he would be dead and we'd go down to 4 pirates left.

So with all pirates left, the captain gives pirate 5 the coin. Pirate 1 votes aye for his life, pirate 2 votes aye for his life (as otherwise he dies next round) and pirate 5 votes aye as he gets the money. (Note the only other way pirate 5 can get the money is if it goes down to 2 pirates which won't happen because of the above logic).

Small addition:

In the third step when 3, 4, 5, and 6 are left -- pirate 3 has a choice of bribing either 4 or 5. Since if it goes into the next round neither of them stands to get the coin. And money takes precedence.

So in the beginning, the captain also has a choice between bribing 6 who can't get any money otherwise, and 4 or 5 who only have 50% chance of getting coin if hey voted against. And the whole coin beats 50% chance plus whatever fun they get watching 2 men walking the plank.
