Question

Here are some of my favorite riddles related to directions:

1. A man and woman run through a field holding hands. They bound toward the sunset, happy as can be. Suddenly, the man moves off of his straight-line course and starts veering to his left. At the same time, the woman begins running off to her right.

They continue this for a full minute, but never let go of each others' hands. How is this possible?

2. Two soldiers, William and Ethan, are assigned to guard a bridge, which connects the West and East sides of the Great Kingdom. Each soldier is ordered to stand at an end of the bridge to make sure no criminals cross. On one side of the bridge stands William, watching over the West side of the kingdom, and making sure no shady characters try to cross the bridge.

Ethan stands on the other side of the bridge, facing the East side of the kingdom with his rifle at the ready in case any criminals try to pass across.

"Any criminals today?" William asks.

Ethan rolls his eyes. "What do you think?" he asks.

"You roll your eyes too much," William says.

How could William tell that Ethan was rolling his eyes?

William stands on the East side but FACES West, and Ethan stands on the West side but FACES East. The puzzle only refers to which side of the kingdom each soldier is watching, not which side of the bridge each is standing on.

I guess the bridge is short enough that the two soldiers can see each other's faces.

1.two people can hold their hand if its their left and right hand so when they turn around it was left of one but right side of other one....

2.they were facing each other and guarding their respective side ie ethan standing at west side and guarding east so the william standing east side of bridge and guarding west side

i think puzzle second is posted earlier so should check before posting a puzzle

For some odd reason, while they hold hands, the man is running forwards but the woman is running backwards. So when they start to veer, it's easy for the man to move to his left while the woman moves to her right while still holding hands.

Why she'd want to run backwards, though, I'm not sure.

The other even worse solution is that both had a hand amputated recently. The man holds the woman's amputated hand, and the woman holds the man's. So they can run anywhere they want and still hold each others' hands without being anywhere near each other.

I guess the third, slightly more plausible solution is that they start running towards each other, clasping their hands in front of them (i.e., holding their own hands). The puzzle states at the beginning that they're holding hands, but it doesn't say which hands. When they meet, the man veers left, the woman veers right, and they continue running together, holding each others' hands.

1. They are holding their own hands, behind their back for example

2. a) the two men don't trust each other, or b) The man on the West end is watching the East side, and the man on the East is watching the West.

So, as happy lovers do, they found each other and are running towards each other, clasping their own hands towards their chest, bounding towards each other from opposite sides of, say, a hill. see diagram below:

MAN -------------> <---------------- WOMAN

Then, when they meet, since they are headed towards each other, when the man goes left and the woman goes right, they are running next to each other, but holding each others' hands now. see diagram below (ignore the .... for formatting):

...................^-^

...................^-^

...................^-^

...................^-^

MAN -------------->^ ^<------------------------- WOMAN

Hopefully that makes sense.

This is the case of you get what you ask for. Either a) the bridge is incredibly short, but I like option b) better.

b) They are standing on the sides ("ends") of the bridge - perhaps in the middle, guarding each respective direction, but facing each other. see diagram below:

WEST ----------------GUARD-A------------------ EAST

WEST ----------------GUARD-B------------------ EAST

It is possible that while holding hands they both turn in and around to walk back the way they came, only now they are holding hands accross each other and the other arm is around the shoulder of the other. Ex. Now the Man is on the left and the woman on the right. The man has his left hand accross his body and holding onto the worman's right hand, which is accross her body. The man's right arm is around her shoulder and her left arm is around his.

Here are the correct answers:

1. The woman on the right was walking backwards. The man's right hand held the woman's left hand, so the man walks to his left, and the woman walks to her right and started to go left of the view.

Sorry, I guess I wrongly stated the first part where the two are supposed to hold hands with each other. Because of that, I would also consider this creative answer:

The man and the woman run towards each other holding their own hands. Then they start running towards the sunset. The man turns left to do so, then the woman turns right to do so. Then they hold each others hands towards the sunset.

Congrats to the following who got it right sks, sacohen0326, Mitspieler, scuttill, Quag

I didn't consider they were holding their own hands only because at the end it is stated that they held each others hand. I did not also consider that they bumped towards each other because it states that they continue doing this for a minute. Once they bumped, they couldn't possibly continue walking for a minute.

Lol to the amputated arm answer, the turning around answer of psycho, and the 0.0001 degree right and left answer

2. Ethan, the East guard, was standing on the West end of the bridge and facing East. William, the West guard, was standing on the East end of the bridge and facing West. The bridge must have been short enough for them to see each other.

Congrats to the following who got it right sks, sacohen0326, psycho, Quag

I like scuttill's answer too. :D

Oh and welcome to the Den sks, spf, and Mitspieler!

The riddle was correctly stated:- A man and woman run through a field holding hands. They bound toward the sunset, happy as can be. Suddenly, the man moves off of his straight-line course and starts veering to his left. At the same time, the woman begins running off to her right. stated and the correct answer is:-The man was facing forward, but the woman was running backwards. The man's right hand was holding the woman's right hand. They both veered in the same geographic direction, but it was the man's left and the woman's right becaus the woman was running backwards.
