Staring at the flag long enough will more or less temporarily imprint the image into your eyes, do if you look at something else, the image of the flag should be pretty much superimposed over what you're seeing. It's much like how a sparkler leaves what looks like a trail of light and how if you stare at a bright light long enough there will be a little black spot in your vision.
