Question

You are a traveler in route for Town X. You've been walking non-stop for nearly five days, but one afternoon you arrive at a fork in the road. There is someone standing in front of each path, one will always Lie, and one will always tell the truth. The path leading to Town X is behind the truthteller. You may only ask one question to either the liar or the truthteller. What one question do you ask to get to Town X?

I am making the assumption here that you don't know which one lies and which one tells the truth...

You ask one of them which path the OTHER would tell you. the truth teller will know that the liar will lie, so he will say the wrong path. the Liar knows the truth-teller has to tell you the right path, so he will tell you the wrong path (he lies). that way, either answer will be wrong, so you pick the other path

The trick is to get a different response with the one question, yes vs. no. If they both say yes or both say no you can't get the answer. Since we know the town is behind the truth teller, the trick is to ask person A (it doesn't matter who is asked) if person B would say that person A is the truth teller. The truth teller would say no, because the liar would say person A is not the truth teller if in fact he was. The truth teller would then be person A. If you person A is the liar and you ask the same question, the person who lies would say yes, since he would lie about the truth teller saying he is not the truth teller. This way you know right away who is the liar and truth teller with one question.

Ask either what the other woould say. If the reply is positive then the answer is negative, and vise versa.

Ask either (you need only ask one) what the other woould say. If the reply is positive then the answer is negative, and vise versa. For example: "Will the other say that this is the route to Town X?" If he/she is te truth teller and says the other wouls say yes, then you know the answer is no. If he/she is the liar and says the other would say yes, you know the answer would still be no. The reverse is also true; if the person you ask answers no, the true answer is yes
