Sometimes when I make these up, I think they are too easy, or too vague, or too specific... let's see how this one fares with you, readers and riddlers:

I can be hard or soft or clean or dirty

My figure changes to fit the one who holds me

I'm strong enough to wear away the toughest of the tough

And also smooth the edges of the roughest of the rough

I can heal the sick or carry a plague through a city

I can put out a fire or burn you with electricity

I am sometimes a passageway but never a road

In me both life and death make their abode
