Question

To keep me, you must give me. What am I?

What row of numbers come next?

1

11

21

1211

111221

312211

13112221

A man walks into a bar and asks for a glass of water. The bartender pulls out a gun and pulls the trigger. The man smiles and thanks the bartender. He leaves. What happened?

Here are tougher ones that you'll have to ask me questions about..

A man is falling naked holding a relatively short straw. What happened?

A man is found in the desert and a stone is found near him. What happened?

A man is watching TV in a bar. Something big happens in the news. He yelps, runs to a house, turns the light on, and shoots himself. What happened?

This is an unusual passage. What's wrong with it?

"Gatsby was walking back from a visit down in Branton Hill's manufacturing district on a Saturday night. A busy day's traffic had had its noisy run; and with not many folks in sight, His Honor got along without having to stop to grasp a hand, or talk; for a mayor out of City Hall is a shining mark for any politician. And so, coming to Broadway, a booming bass drum and sounds of singing, told of a small Salvation Army unit carrying on amidst Broadway's night shopping crowds. Gatsby, walking towards that group, saw a young girl, back toward him, just finishing a long, soulful oration ... "

The above passage is taken from the book "Gatsby" written by Ernest Vincent Wright in the late 1930's.

Sorry for putting up so much at once.

Not what I was looking for, but it works. I'll give you credit for that.

zut! I thought I had it.

for the one about the naked man is it

you know when people pull straws or sticks, whoever get the shorter stick(I think that is where the saying" You got the shorter end of the stick", or something like that, comes from) has to do the unwanted duty, is that what is happening here?

They drew straws to see who had to lighten the plane, (maybe it was running out of gas) and he got the short one.

there are no "e"s anywhere in the passage. Abnormal because e is the most common letter in the English language.

Hi JustinTyme, You WERE just in time... I answered the same

The man was asking for water because he had the hiccups. The bartender pulled out an unloaded gun and pulled the trigger, scaring the man and curing his hiccups. He left happy.

Superman & kryptonite

:excl: Because there are a lot of new Den-izens:

Just as an FYI, at least one or two of these have been posted before. Everyone should read the "Important: Read before Posting" message (top of the forum page) and do a search to see if a riddle has been posted previously. Threads containing such riddles might be locked by one of the moderators.

Yes, on the right track. But what is the unwanted duty, and why is he naked? (This is related to my Phoenix riddle)

I didn't read it

jumping off the roof? Being pushed off the roof? Part of the unwanted duty? That's what came with the whole package/dare?

I'll be sure to though

Yep, I bet that's it, He used "e" 8 times in just saying where it is from.

Well, if related to the phoenix riddle how about....

He was flying in a hot air balloon when the burner went out, and it started to decend rapidly. Everyone on board atempted to lighten the load by throwing everything they could overboard (clothes included...thus he is naked). When this still was not enough, they all drew straws to see who would jump out and sacrifice themselves to save the lives of everyone else. The naked dead man drew the short straw and jumped to his death.

He rigged a gun to shoot someone in (a) house when the person came in and turned the lights on, but whatever he saw on the news caused him to run to the house to stop the gun from going off and killing the wrong person and when he turned on the lights, he was shot with his own gun? - Maybe his cheating wife was taking their children to the airport for a trip to grandma's house and he planned to have the gun rigged to kill his wife when she returned and turned on the lights. But what he saw on the news was that all outbound flights were cancelled due to bad weather, so he panicked and had to run to the house to un-rig the gun before they returned home, in case his children walked in the house first and were in the line of fire?

I know... and I'm sure the actual answer is MUCH more simple than mine :duh: , but I thought I'd put it out there anyway, 'cause it's fun! .

No... But I like your answer better than mine. I think a hint will suffice in the riddle. That is:

I will never sail again.

Font has to do with hint.

Umm.. no one's getting the house-shooting one. So I'll do a spoiler.

The man watches the news, which is a boat crashed into an island because a lighthouse was unoperational. The man panics, because he's the lighthouse manager. He rushes to the lighthouse, turns the light on in the lighthouse, and shoots himself from the guilt.
