Question

There are eight wheels, each bearing

the same scrambled alphabet around

the rim. These are mounted on a shaft

and turned until the word LOVESICK

appears. Three positions farther on

appears PAYCBLSO. The wheels are

then reset to the word DAUGHTER.

Four positions farther on appears

VZCDSBIY. If the wheels are now

reset to IGYWVHPO, what word will

appear five positions farther on?

BACHELOR

Did you make this puzzle up?

Now who's gonna to clean up all these cardboard wheels?!

I didn't make this puzzle up. It was originally posed by Walter Penney sometime in the 1960s. I have some unpublished papers with lots of his puzzles. I have posted some of my own here, but if I use those made by someone else, I try to give proper attribution.

Great puzzles. Nice that you have the papers -- a relative perhaps?

No, not a relative. But I met him a few times. He was kind of like Mr. Burns on The Simpsons. I still have more of his puzzles to put up -- one every day or two for a while.

I know this is an older one Super, but I've been going back to look at some you've posted. This one for some reason is baffling me. I've got some sort of a blockage in my brain. Maybe's I've been doing too many in a row. What's the technique here?

Well, the wheels are identical. They are just rotated relative to each other to show some word facing the same direction. You are told what can be seen on the wheels at some number of positions later. So, you can get several incomplete sequences, by position, around the scrambled sequence. They must be meshed together to get the partial sequence used for all wheels. If these wheels are set to show you IGYWVHPO, there will be a (possibly partial) word five positions ahead in the group of wheels.
