Question

I haven't been too happy with my latest riddles, but I think this one might be a pretty good one. Maybe.

As for the difficulty... I have no idea how hard or easy it is. Noooooooooo idea at all.

Have fun!

When I change from I to we, to my form of plurality

It's my first syllable that's said differently

(It's my second syllable that changes spelling)

Some activists, enthused and firm

Consider me to be a belittling term

(And they'll even proffer a second spelling)

I'm something you can't choose to be

Unless you're willing to cough up money

(These parenthesis are ones I need not)

I'm something many in the world have sought

But I'm not something that can just be bought

(Actually I can, but that's an ugly thought)

I have many strange and very mysterious ways

But mayhap I'm not, from you, very far away

It was a good riddle. The only reason it clicked for me was that I remembered some comedian's bit, whose name escapes me, that was about the stupidity of the English language and how the spelling can be changed in one syllable, but the sound changes in a different syllable. The specific example he used was the answer to the riddle. If not for that I would have been stumped.

Was it George Carlton by any chance? He did a lot of language based comedy.

I first realized the woman/women thing when my mom had trouble pronouncing women (spanish heritage + english's stupid spelling = trouble), and then later I thought it'd make a good riddle.

One of my all time favorite comics is George Carlin, and he did speak at lengths about language, so in all probability it was him.

Hehe, those lines above caught my attention, like with some changes and .. yeah ... but I didn't really give it much thought ._.

Nice riddle
