Question

An explorer is on an expedition to find an ancient village who's people always tell the truth. Unfortunately, they live near a village that will always lie. The explorer comes to a fork on the path near the two villages. There stands a single man. The explorer does not know which village he is from, nor does he know which way to either village. The man tells him that he may have one question. What does he ask?

There are two different ways to answer this question so with each answer, please explain.

Read the question carefully to find any evidence of where the man is from.

if the man had told him he had one question and he did then he'd be telling the truth. then you should ask which way to his village.

if the man had told him he had one question and he did then he'd be telling the truth. then you should ask which way to his village.

well thats both answers together

you can either ask which way to his village(liar and truth-teller will both tell the same way) you would then go that way.

or with the fact that you can have a question, you know he tells the truth and you can ask to the village of the truth.

He should ask him the way to his village.

If he is from the village that always says the truth then he will give him the right directions to his village which is the village that always says the truth.

If he is from the village that always says lies then he will lie and give him the directions to the village that always says the truth

the explorer asks him 2 questions:

1. where is the village that will always tell the truth? -remember the answer

2. what village is he from?

-if he answers, he is from the village that always lies, and explorer goes the opposite way the man told him from the first question.

-if he doesn't answer, he is from the village that always tells the truth, and the explorer goes the way the man told him from the first question.

you cannot ask more than one question

The fact that you asked a question signifies that the man was telling the truth.

If he says you may have one question and he does not prevent you from asking that one question, then that is truth.

From there you could simply ask,

"Which way to the truth/lie village?"

knowing that he already told you the truth, and would not lie about the answer.

A less elegant solution is to ask, "if I were to ask you if this is the way to the village where they tell the truth, would you say 'yes'?"

If he is a truth teller and it it is the way he will say yes, if not he will say no. If he is a liar, he will lie about what he would say and therefor say yes if it is the way and no if it is not.

either way a yes means go that way and a no means go the other.

I would ask to point to the way to village he is from, because either way I would be going to the village where the people speak only the truth. If the person was really from the truth village, he would point the way to the truthful village, if the person were from the village where they always lied, the person would point the way to the village of truthful people.

well one way to figure out which tribe lies or tells the truth is to ask them something that is obvious. Like "Are you a tribe?" If they say no then you know that they lie and if they say yes then u know that they dnt and that is the right tribe.

but thats the problem. he doesnt know which village he needs to go in and so he cant just go to where ever he is pointed to.
