the two numbers 9 and 9 can be formed (although not identically) by removing:

on the left side, the bottom match stick

on the bottom side, the right match stick.

we are left with two 9's that share a match stick. one nine will as appears on a digital clock, the other will be without the bottom line.

9 is a perfect square of 3 ;)

I like your answer - very smart but I'm going to modify:

remove the bottom left lateral stick to form a nine 9 and then remove the top right lateral stick to form a six 6

nine 9 is a perfect square of 3 and six 6 is a perfect square of 2
