Question

There is a clothing store in Bartlesville. The owner has devised his own method of pricing items. A vest costs $20, socks cost $25, a tie costs $15 and a blouse costs $30. Using the method, how much would a pair of underwear cost?

if it's "Underwear" he's selling, it would be $45...but if it's "pair of underwear" it would be $75...

HUH?

I guess wafflechip's way is MUCH easier...but my way (luckily, I guess) works.

Going in groups of two...

Item 1 = 4 * 5

Item 2 = 5 * 5

In the first group of two, there is a 4 and a 5... so I added them to equal 9.

Item 3 = 3 * 5

Item 4 = 6 * 5

So in the second group of items, there is a 3 and a 6, which also add up to 9.

So I assumed that the last item must be 9 * 5, which = 45.

I disagree with Pickett

"but if it's "pair of underwear" it would be $75..."

"pair of underwear" is to "a vest" as $45 is to $20

Because it said "A PAIR OF UNDERWEAR"...so really is like "A VEST"...so, you would ignore the "A" and that leaves "PAIR OF UNDERWEAR"...and then I ignored spaces when calculating...

"A pair of underwear" is to "a vest" as $75 is to $20

No, regardless of the mathematical reasoning, due to the nature of the question as put forward, it's $90. The vest and socks are both garments to be worn under the clothes and so therefore it would be 2x the price of the 2 garments. Ergo, 20+25x2=90. Sure, you had another meaning but logic dictates this as the correct answer.

45....9 letters X $5

I'm afraid it does.

I'm afraid you're making it harder than it needs to be. I don't see how being an undergarment makes it more expensive. There's absolutely no evidence for that anywhere in the question.

Vests are worn as the outermost layer (coats excluded) so that doesn't apply. Please explain further if you are certain of your logic.

Hi Guys,

I believe the answer is $90.

underwear = 9 letters x $5 = $45

A pair is 2 of a kind. Therefore the answer is 2 x 45 = $90

Hi Guys,

I believe the answer is $90.

underwear = 9 letters x $5 = $45

A pair is 2 of a kind. Therefore the answer is 2 x 45 = $90

BUT A PAIR OF UNDERWEAR MEANS ONE IN THIS CASE, LIKE A JEAN IS A PAIR OF PANT THEREFORE THE ANSWER IS 45

Oh well winter draws away until the cold chill comes back

- I'll add another of my old favorites...

Roses are red, violets are blue.

so goes the aged old rhyme.

But I know that rose's are blue and Violet's are red

Coz I've seen them hanging on the line!

sorry the discussion needed some levity methinks.

You know, not that I think that this logic is anywhere near right, but it's wrong in itself as well.

20+25x2=90

PEMDAS... 20+25x2 = 70, not 90...

I noticed that too. I think it was supposed to be written (20+25)x2=90. Nevertheless, the answer was given on the first page, there is no point going on about this.
