Question

With two great strides I enter the fray,

Ten and six foes opposing my way,

Forward I march, and never step back,

Traversing terrain of white and black,

The least of my kind, with eyes on the prize,

At journey's end my status will rise...

What am I?

Yes,

A pawn.

Can move 2 spaces on its first move

Can be promoted to queen if it makes it all the way across the board

Can be promoted to anything once it reaches the other side. Although the only other piece it makes sense to promote it to would be a knight. But I've done it before that way.

Nice solve Simon.

There are theoretical (if not practical) situations where promotion to rook is necessary to avoid stalemating the enemy king.
