Question

Hello all,

I recently discovered this forum thanks to the google widget and have been trolling for about a week now. The precision inherent in a truly great riddle inspired me to write one of my own. I would appreciate any and all honest feedback. Please Enjoy:

I am the embodiment of precision. So too, must you be.

I’m always at the top of your mind and at the bottom of all your questions.

With a change of position, I can divide the masses.

In fact, you probably wouldn’t be here without me.

Despite all this, on the whole, I’m practically useless.

What am I?

There will be many guesses that fit most but not all of the clues. There may even be more than one correct answer, although I don't see any. Cell would be the former, by the way, but a strong guess, and one I hadn't thought of.

Is it a question mark?

Great guesses! I especially liked "opinion", as it made me have to take another look at my riddle.

No Smithstar4, it is not a period. And your reasoning is a bit flawed.

Remember, you must be precise. Each clue must fit the answer.

An electron? or some other subatomic particle?

It could be, if you can show me how it applies to the last clue. This is the closest anyone has come to an answer that wasn't the one I had in mind.

Electrons by themselves are pretty useless without protons and neutrons. Or am I stretching too far?

I'll keep thinking about it if I'm close to the answer.

"The precision inherent in a truly great riddle inspired me"

I wasn't kidding -

"the answer to a riddle"

Really does fit, especially when you compare it to the preface that was made above!!

I got it -
a RIDDLE! edit: (or the answer to a riddle...)

I REALLY like that answer! Especially because it's rather funny as well as very close to being correct. Considering the particular demographic we have here, it's ALMOST completely accurate. Almost... Look closer.
