There are 100 monks in a monastery located on an island. These monks have all taken a vow of silenece and are also forbidden to communicate with each other in non-verbal signals as well. They hold these disciplines very dearly. They are also completely selfless, meaning in short, each would give his own life to save the others' without hesitation.
One day an angel appears to them on their morning gathering (They meet once a day in the mornings and retire to their respective rooms to meditate for the rest of the day). The angel tells them:one or a few ('x' number) of the monks have been infected with a highly contagious and fatal disease. She does not tell them how many but emphasiszes that those that are infected must terminate their lives to save the others.
The disease is not contagious yet but will become contagious in 30 days. The only physical tell of the disease is red spots on the forhead.
On the 6th day there is death/deaths in the form of suicides in the monastery. How many monks died?
Please give answers with reasoning.
P.S- there are no mirrors or reflective surfaces in the monastery. THe monks are forbidden to leave the monastery.
