Question

Hi! this is my first post :)

I've been banging my head on the wall because of this problem. And I'm sorry that I do not know the solution but that was one of the reason I found this forum :) as I was looking for the answer on the web.

So... the challenge is, can u break the figure below into 3 identical shapes?

Are we required to divide along the lines, or can we do curves and diagonals?

There are no restrictions mentioned in the problem So I believe we can do whatever we want.

I see the top and bottom would fit into each other like puzzle pieces... I wonder if it's cheating to cut the shape in two, horizontally, with a straight line, then switch the top and bottom, thus making a rectangle... Then go from there. (?) -steve

yes there is a way

cut it in half vertically

and then put the left on the right.

lay shape on its side

and then move the square sticking out into the hole on the other side.

then cut into thirds.

i think i got it

go down the shape from topr to bottom on the second line over from the left and the fourth line over....those are your first two shapes...then take what you haveleft (the middle piece) and slit it down the middle long ways...slide one half up a square and it is like the other pieces...i may be wrong and im sorry i couldnt put the image in my answer to help describe it...im kinda new to this site

since there are 8 blocks

in this rectangle and you cant divide 3 by eight I suggest you triple the eight to 24. Or subdivide the 8 squares into thirds. That gives you 24 which you can be divided by 3!

Great puzzle! Assuming that "cutting" the shape is cheating, im attemping to solve the puzzle following the lines. This is as close as i have come, someone care to relook this?

Right idea. I was doing the same thing. You have Blue & green looking the same but yellow is the wrong shape. Keep trying - I think you're very close.

This is a tricky one. I can make FOUR identical shapes very easily and the solution for TWO is pretty obvious but THREE is escaping me. I'll keep playing with it.

Go 3-D! Cut the shape out and wrap it around a round cylinder or square block so that the blocks that stick out fit like tabs in the "missing" area. Then divide easily. This is just a variation of the classic "thinking outside the box" puzzles.

sounds good ... works fine at the beginning ... however, could you post the picture completely solved (distinguishing the 3 parts with 3 colors)

Sorry but I don't know to draw it and upload it but I think I can describe it for you...

imagine a paper the image on a paper towel that is just wide enough to wrap around the core. (interlocking the blocks into the "slots" when you wrap it. Then slice it into thirds - if the core was vertical, just count down every two squares and slice. That will leave you with 3 RINGS of 8 squares each.

Will it be easy to divide by following the zigzag outline? What I mean is:

Unless I got the wrong picture. With this arrangment, we can divide into even more identical shape than 3.

Is this problem that difficult.?

Given that there are no restrictions, it is for us to slice the shape into whatever way we want to.

In this figure, the three shapes re identical. That's what the problem asks for. It may not be in the exact dimensions. But here is the key.

Cut the shape into 4/3 of a square from the outline, along the outline. You will have to draw two lines, making three identical shapes. This also holds good for identical area and shape propositions.
