A man goes and visits his friend 30 miles away. He doesnt mind speeding, so he travels at 60 mph to arrive in 30 minutes. On the way back he has car troubles, and it takes an hour to get home. What was the average speed for his trip?

His trip included a visit to his friends so:

He drove 2 lots of 30 miles: 60miles

His trip there took 0.5h and back took 1h: 1.5

He was at his friends place for x h

so:

Ave Speed = 60miles/(x + 1.5) h
